Seasonal Fresno Roof Maintenance

A season-by-season checklist built around the valley climate: long hot summers, a short rainy season and winter tule fog.

Short answerPrepare the roof in fall (clean gutters, check flashing, trim branches), watch it during winter storms, inspect for damage in spring, and in summer focus on heat-related wear and attic ventilation. Do ground-level checks yourself and leave steep or high roof work to professionals.

The valley roof year

National Weather Service climate records for Fresno show a sharply seasonal pattern: little to no rain from late spring through early fall, then a rainy season that usually runs from about November to April. Dense valley fog (tule fog) is common in December and January. Each season stresses a roof differently.

The Central Valley roof year: most rain falls between late fall and early spring, while summer brings long stretches of intense heat and sun.

Fall: get ready for rain (Sept–Nov)

  • Clean gutters and flush downspouts (gutter guide).
  • From the ground with binoculars, look for missing, cracked or lifted shingles.
  • Check flashing at chimneys, skylights, vents and walls for gaps or rust.
  • Trim branches back from the roof; this also removes rodent bridges.
  • Look at fascia and soffits for peeling paint or soft spots (fascia guide).
  • Book any repairs now, before contractors are busy with storm calls.

Winter: rain and fog (Dec–Feb)

  • During a heavy rain, walk around the house: note overflowing gutters and where water lands.
  • Check ceilings and the attic for stains after storms.
  • Clear leaves again after the last trees drop them.
  • Watch for moss or algae on shaded, fog-damp slopes.
  • Listen for attic noises; winter is when rodents seek shelter (entry points).

Spring: inspect the damage (Mar–May)

  • Look over the roof after the rainy season ends; note any storm damage.
  • Check gutters for heavy granule buildup, a sign of aging shingles.
  • Consider a professional inspection every few years, or after a major storm.
  • Plan repair, rejuvenation or replacement before summer (decision guide).

Summer: heat and UV (Jun–Aug)

  • Check attic ventilation is clear and working (vent guide).
  • Inspect sealant at gutters, flashing and penetrations; heat dries it out.
  • Avoid walking on shingles in midday heat; softened shingles damage easily.
  • If you're re-roofing, ask about cool roof products.
